What do they mean by ‘Competitive benefits’ ?

“Competitive benefits” or “excellent benefits package” appears in thousands of UK job adverts, yet it rarely specifies what those benefits actually are. Like “competitive salary”, the word “competitive” is doing a lot of heavy lifting without any evidence.

What to expect

In the UK, statutory benefits include 28 days paid holiday (which can include bank holidays), workplace pension auto-enrolment, and statutory sick pay. Anything above this is genuinely additional. Common extras include private health insurance, enhanced pension contributions, death-in-service cover, cycle-to-work schemes, or additional holiday days.

Why they keep it vague

Some companies keep benefits vague because the package is only marginally above the statutory minimum and listing it would be underwhelming. Others have genuinely strong benefits but prefer to discuss them at offer stage. Either way, you have every right to ask early.

Questions to ask

  • Can you provide a full breakdown of the benefits package?
  • How many days of annual leave are offered, and does that include bank holidays?
  • What is the employer pension contribution?
  • Is private healthcare included, and does it cover dependents?
