Almost every job advert offers “opportunity for growth” or “career progression”, but the phrase is meaningless without specifics. It could refer to a well-structured promotion path with clear milestones, or it could be an empty promise used to justify a lower starting salary.
What to look for
Genuine growth opportunities are backed by evidence: a training budget, mentoring programmes, internal promotion statistics, or clear job levels. If the advert mentions growth but provides no detail, treat it as a talking point for the interview rather than a guaranteed benefit.
Why it can be misleading
Small companies may offer growth in the sense that your role expands as the business grows, but this often means more responsibility without a corresponding pay rise or title change. “Growth” is also sometimes used to fill roles with high turnover — the growth is simply replacing the people who left.
Questions to ask
- Can you describe the typical career path from this role?
- How many people have been promoted internally in the last year?
- Is there a dedicated training or development budget?
- What does a performance review cycle look like here?
